China CPI and PPI data delight, but banker urges for tightening

China’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) was up 0.4 percent in September from August but dipped 1.1 percent year on year in the first nine months of this year, the National Bureau of Statistics said Thursday.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 0.6 percent in Septmeber alone but fell 6.5 percent during the first nine months, director-general Li Xiaochao told a press conference in Beijing.

Qin Xiao, chairman of China Merchant Bank wrote in the Financial Times that China must shift from a loose monetary policy stance to a netural one.

He added, the government should not neglect asset-price movements and should not be afraid of a moderate slowdown in the economy.
